2002 Srebrenica Report by NIOD

In November 1996, the Netherlands Institute for War Documentation (NIOD) was instructed by the Dutch Government to carry out a study of 'the events prior to, during and after the fall of Srebrenica'. For the purposes of this independent historical analytical research, the Government undertook to do everything in its power to grant the NIOD researchers access to the source material at its disposal. On 10 April 2002, this report was made public with the presentation of the first copy to the Minister of Education, Culture and Science, L.M.L.H.A. Hermans M.A., as representative of the Government.

This website contains documents relating to the creation of this report and the full text of the report.

VOLUNTEERING: THE BUSINESS CASE
The City of London Corporation's recent publication seeks to articulate the business case for volunteering.

Recent research by a number of organisations and academic institutions supports this case for volunteering. One challenge researchers face is that the impact of volunteering is usually indirect or induced. Cause-effect can be difficult to ascertain

THE FEMALE SIDE OF POVERTY

Europe's impoverished are mainly women, while motherhood and ageing increase the risk of indebtedness and social exclusion. A widening pay gap, short-term contracts and expensive and inadequate childcare are pushing more and more women below the breadline. EuroparlTV talks to a panel of experts.

This 17 minute report explains briefly this situation. Subtitles to the English record are given in Spanish.

TRANSITION FROM INSTITUTIONAL TO COMMUNITY-BASED CARE
Across the EU many people of all ages and different conditions (elderly, children, persons with disabilities or mental health problems) live in residential institutions which tend to segregate them from the community. Recent studies and research funded by the Commission provide evidence in support of transition from institutional care to community-based alternatives.

EU REPORT ON THE PRINCIPLE OF EQUAL TREATMENT FOR MEN AND WOMEN

Implementation of Directive 2002/73/EC has generally been satisfactory, although not all countries have yet brought their rules into line with EU requirements. The report identifies the main problems and good practices in implementing the Directive, which aims to promote equal treatment for men and women in access to employment, vocational training and promotion, and working conditions.

This report looks at how Member States have implemented the key provisions of Directive 2002/73/EC, with a view to identifying the main problems and good practices. It notes progress in implementing the Directive and describes it as satisfactory, but draws also attention to the fact that the Commission has had to take action against some national governments that have not yet brought their laws and procedures into line with the Directive. The report also focuses on the enforcement of obligations under the Directive, noting that victims of discrimination rarely make use of traditional litigation.

National equality bodies have a key role in furthering equality, says the report, particularly in assisting victims of discrimination, who are more likely to turn to an equality body than make use of traditional litigation. As for the role of social partners, employers and NGOs in promoting equality, the report notes a great diversity of approaches throughout Member States.

AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL REPORT 2009

Amnesty International is calling for a New Global Deal on human rights, because of a human rights investment gap by world leaders.

"It's not just the economy, it's a human rights crisis - the world is sitting on a social, political and economic time bomb," said Irene Khan at the presentation of the new report.

This report comprehends the human rights situation in 157 States worldwide and it constitutes a reference to anyone working on the field.
